How to Get Drafted into the AFL and AFLW

Understanding the Draft Process

The draft is a series of football events held during November to December per year, organised in the hopes of taking on new players to join the AFL or AFLW.

In order to be eligible, you must be turning 18 or older (by December 31st of that year). School leavers are typically chosen. However, any player over 18 can be nominated for several years before officially being drafted.

Key Steps to Increase Your Draft Prospects

Early Development and Participation

Engage in Junior and Local Competitions

Begin by playing at the grassroots level to develop fundamental skills and gain match experience.

Excel in State Representation

Outstanding performance in state leagues can lead to selection in the AFL National Championships, providing a platform to demonstrate your abilities against top-tier peers.

Progress to Elite Youth Competitions

Aim to participate in elite under-18 or under-19 leagues, such as the AFL & AFLW Academy Teams, Coates Talent League, WAFL Colts or SANFL U19s, where talent scouts frequently search for prospective draftees.

Showcase Your Talent in National Championships
